Client - Union Railways (North); Principal Designer - Rail Link Engineering; Principal Contractor - Kier – Nuttall Joint Venture (KNJV).

The Kings Cross project involved an enormously complex interface between many disciplines, and the work was carried out with a very sophisticated approach to safety and quality. The judges called it "a heroic endeavor" and they praised the "admirable management structure" and the highly impressive integration of the entire team from client through to sub-contractor.

• Every part of the civil works is constrained rigidly by the highly complex interconnecting geometry of the existing, relocated and new rail lines weaving across and under the site.

• Risks included two Christmas holiday possessions for very large bridge launches across multitrack main railway lines outside King’s Cross and St Pancras stations. Had either been missed there would have been a year’s delay.

• Safety, Safety and Safety as a priority. Excellent record of up to 12 month periods with no accidents despite the huge volume of complex, heavy and difficult work done.

• An amazingly ‘clean’ site with rigorous attention to appropriate fine detailing and finishes - even of handrails - on a facility that will only ever have limited access for works personnel, never the public.
